WINE:// Pinot Noir - A Quick Taste
Dive deep into the world of wine with us every Wednesday, starting with understanding Pinot Noir's unique characteristics and a shoutout to a favorite winery
Welcome, wine enthusiasts, to the very first mycyberspace Wine Wednesday!
As the autumn leaves begin to fall, there's nothing more comforting than curling up with a glass of wine (especially with the right playlist) that echoes the richness and depth of the season. Today, we’re starting with a classic and a personal favorite varietal: the ever-enticing Pinot Noir.
The Magic of Pinot Noir:
Pinot Noir is often hailed as the grape that captures the essence of the terroir like no other. Its delicate skin and temperamental nature make it a challenging grape for winemakers, yet the results are nothing short of magical.
Pinot Noir is renowned for its silky texture and medium body. It strikes a harmonious balance between acidity and fruitiness, making it a versatile companion to various dishes.
The flavors often mirror the aromas, with additional complexity introduced by the wine’s aging process—whether in stainless steel, which preserves its purity, or oak, which imparts a hint of spice and vanilla.
For more, here’s a Pinot profile on 019 Wine.
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Often lighter in color, Pinot Noir has a distinct translucent ruby hue (thanks to its delicate, thin skin)
Aroma: The wine greets your senses with a complex bouquet of red berries, florals, and a hint of earthiness. Here are more tasting notes.
Palette: Upon the first sip, expect a symphony of flavors ranging from succulent cherries to subtle spices. The wine's acidity is bright but well-balanced.
Pairing Suggestions:
The versatility of Pinot Noir shines through in its pairing capabilities. Thanks to its beautiful balance of body and acidity, Pinot Noir is exceptionally food-friendly.
It compliments a wide array of flavors, from succulent duck breast, to tender red meat, to earthy mushrooms. I always love to pair it with anything with rosemary since so many of the Sonoma vineyards are dotted with wild rosemary. What grows together goes together!
As we embrace the fall, consider pairing it with a roasted turkey or a hearty butternut squash risotto. Pinot Noir also pairs beautifully with salmon and steelhead.
Tip: Serve your Pinot Noirs just slightly chilled for maximum tasting pleasure! 15-20 minutes before tasting, pop the bottle in the fridge. If you are an avid wine collector or drinker (and especially if you live in a hot weather state like Texas), a wine fridge is great for wine storage. Ours is set to 55 degrees F.
Spotlight Winery: Fort Ross Vineyard & Winery
Let’s take a virtual journey to a very special place to me: the rugged Sonoma Coast. The Sonoma Coast is my favorite AVA, which is so special to me. It’s so special to me; it’s where I got married.
The Sonoma Coast is home to one of my absolute favorite wineries: Fort Ross Vineyard & Winery.
Fort Ross Vineyards presides majestically over the Pacific Ocean, offering breathtaking views and equally stunning wines. You can see the Pacific Ocean peeking over all the pine trees as you taste. Terroir at its finest!
Steeped in History:
Fort Ross Vineyard & Winery is steeped in history, tracing back to the Russian-American Company's settlement in the early 19th century. Today, it is a beacon of meticulous viticulture and winemaking craftsmanship, particularly in producing exemplary Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
A Terroir Like No Other:
The vineyard’s unique location, perched on steep ridges soaring over the ocean, imparts its wines an unmistakable minerality and complexity. The cool maritime climate and diverse soil profiles provide ideal conditions for cultivating Pinot Noir grapes that exude depth and express the distinctiveness of their terroir.
Tasting Notes Fort Ross Sea Slopes Pinot Noir:
The Sea Slopes Pinot Noir is a wine encapsulating the essence of the vineyard’s coastal terroir. It’s precisely why I love Sonoma Coast Pinots so much.
It mesmerizes with its brilliant ruby hue and seduces with aromas of wild berries, rose petals, and a hint of forest floor. Elegant and sophisticated on the palate, with vibrant fruit and subtle earthy notes, underlined by silky tannins and a kiss of coastal salinity.

The Stagecoach Road Pinot Noir is an exquisite single-vineyard expression hailing from the steep, mountainous terrains of Fort Ross Vineyard. This captivating wine is a tribute to the arduous journey of pioneers who once traversed the historic Stagecoach Road.
